Uniqlo's Return to Downtown San Francisco
This is a comeback story. Uniqlo's first West Coast flagship opened on Powell Street near Union Square in 2012 and closed in March 2021, when 69 employees lost their jobs. Since then the brand has kept a single city store at Stonestown Galleria out by Lake Merced. The Market Street location gives it a downtown address again, a block from Powell Street Station and steps from the cable car turnaround.
The opening date comes from reporting in the San Francisco Chronicle and Hoodline. Uniqlo's own Market Street store page confirms the address but still lists the store as coming soon, so watch that page for the final word and any grand opening promotions. The store is part of a wider 2026 U.S. push that Uniqlo laid out in January, with new stores in New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington, Miami and Houston.
The company has also lined up local partnerships with the San Francisco Public Library, the Exploratorium, Muni and artist fnnch.
💼 The Jobs Uniqlo Is Filling
Uniqlo hasn't said how many people the store will employ. What we can see is the postings. Two roles tied to the Market Street store are listed right now:
- Retail Sales Associate: full-time or part-time, not seasonal. The posting lists $21.50 an hour. Full-timers average 32 or more hours a week; part-timers average at least 12, with open weekend availability required. The bar is a high school diploma or GED, or six months of retail experience, and you'll need to stand for long stretches and lift 25 pounds or more.
- Loss Prevention Agent: full-time and permanent, posted at $24.50 an hour.
Postings also describe medical, dental and vision coverage, a 401(k) with a match, paid time off and a 30% employee discount. Apply through Uniqlo's official store careers page and filter for San Francisco. Pay rates can change between postings, so trust the listing you apply to.
What Working a Flagship Opening Looks Like
Opening crews get hired and trained in the weeks before launch, and that window is now. Expect folding, fitting rooms, register shifts and stocking. This store adds a UTme! printing station, embroidery, hemming and a repair studio, so anyone with sewing, alterations or custom-print experience should say so up front.
