Lucania Brings Southern Italy to the Ferry Building
The team behind A16, the Chestnut Street pizzeria that has anchored the Marina for years, is taking over the big Ferry Building corner that sat empty after MarketBar closed in 2020. Lucania bills itself as an all-day restaurant, and the SF Standard reports the menu leans on small fish: marinated anchovies, roasted sardines, steamed mussels. A 140-seat patio on the Embarcadero makes it one of the bigger openings this fall. Its own site still says summer while the SF Standard says early October, so watch its Instagram for the date.
An all-day room that size needs morning and evening crews: line and prep cooks, servers, runners, bussers and bar staff.
Shinka Takes Over the Dining Room at The Jay
In the Financial District, Omakase Restaurant Group is opening Shinka on the ground floor of The Jay hotel, replacing Prelude. Executive chef Fumio Yonezawa, a Jean-Georges alum making his Bay Area debut, is building a kaiseki-style tasting menu that marries Japanese sensibility with French technique, backed by heavy in-house fermentation. The hotel's Shinka page lists an October opening, with hours still to be announced.
Cooks with fine-dining or Japanese technique, and anyone who can pour sake and Japanese whisky, should pay attention. Hotel roles are posted through the operator's HEI Hotels careers portal.
Olive Juice Opens a Patio Pop-Up on Divisadero
Hannah Collins Tate, whose design firm has worked on restaurants like Delfina and SPQR, is turning the old Kelly-Moore Paints storefront at 354 Divisadero Street into Olive Juice, a wellness cafe built around olive oil. Expect olive-oil espresso drinks, smoothies and sandwiches. Hoodline reports the patio pop-up runs Thursday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., to start, with the full indoor cafe arriving in 2027.
A small daytime cafe hires small, but a barista who gets in early can grow with it.
15 Romolo Returns to North Beach
Tucked in the alley off Broadway, 15 Romolo has spent two years under renovation. Owners Jon Gasparini and Kelly Anne, who bought the 115-year-old bar in 1998, are bringing it back in mid-October as a tapas bar and cocktail lounge, sangria pitchers and Pimm's cups included. Bartenders and barbacks, take note.
💼 Hiring Reality Check
None of the four has announced how many people it will hire, and none has posted a public hiring event. Get your resume ready now, follow each spot on social media, and watch for postings. Pay at a new restaurant varies widely by role and tips, and San Francisco's own minimum wage sits above the state floor. Our wage line breakdown shows how that compares with neighboring cities.
