Macy's and Bluemercury Holiday Hiring Day Oct. 22: Seasonal Retail Jobs in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Macy's, Inc. holds its next nationwide holiday hiring day on Thursday, October 22, and San Francisco has a bit more riding on it than most cities. The Union Square flagship on O'Farrell Street will take walk-in applicants for seasonal store jobs, and the company named San Francisco one of its top hiring markets this year for Bluemercury, its beauty and skincare chain with shops in the Marina and Laurel Village.

No ticket, no registration. Apply online first, walk in on the 22nd, and if that Thursday doesn't work, Macy's has one more hiring day on November 19.

What Macy's Announced, and What It Didn't

In its September 24 holiday hiring announcement, Macy's, Inc. said it is filling seasonal roles at Macy's, Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury stores, with in-store hiring days on three Thursdays: September 24, October 22 and November 19. Store roles are part-time, and the company says times vary by location.

Here's the San Francisco detail. The city made the company's short list of top hiring markets for Bluemercury. For Macy's stores, the California market on that list is Los Angeles, not the Bay Area, so the Union Square store is hiring as part of the nationwide push rather than as a named hot spot. Macy's hasn't published a headcount for San Francisco or a national total. Treat October 22 as an open door, not a promise of a set number of jobs.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Union Square: Still Open, Still Hiring

The flagship fills the block at Stockton and O'Farrell, steps from the Powell Street BART and Muni station and the cable car turnaround. Macy's announced in early 2024 that it would close the store, then reversed course and is keeping it open while it works with a developer on the site's future. It's on the company's store list, and its transit access counts for a lot when you're closing on a Saturday in December.

πŸ’„ Bluemercury in the Marina and Laurel Village

Bluemercury is the reason San Francisco made Macy's top-markets list. The company's store directory lists two San Francisco shops: one on Chestnut Street in the Marina and one at 3535 California Street in Laurel Village, near Presidio Heights. Applications go through bluemercuryJOBS, and the hiring day covers Bluemercury stores too. They're small boutiques, so stop by ahead of time to ask when a manager will be in.

πŸ“‹ How to Show Up Ready on Oct. 22

  • Call first. Hours vary by store, and the Union Square number is listed above.
  • Apply online before you go. It gives the hiring manager something to pull up. Macy's applicants can also submit a recorded interview.
  • Bring photo ID. If you're hired, you'll complete work-authorization paperwork.
  • Know your availability. Holiday retail runs on nights, weekends and the days around Thanksgiving.

Macy's says every posting lists its pay range, so check the number before you apply. Benefits include colleague discounts and 401(k) savings, with medical, dental and vision coverage based on eligibility.
